What is changing?
Some vehicle manufacturers have begun the transition to SAE J1979-2.
- A subset of Volvo and Mack vehicle models began using the SAE J1979-2 protocol as early as the 2024 model year.
- Testing on SAE J1979-2 vehicles can start now.
- Beginning October 2026, SAE J1979-2 vehicles with compliance deadlines of January 1, 2027 or later must pass mandatory OBD testing using certified OBD test tools to comply with CTC vehicle testing requirements.
